Audiobook fast playback on iphone

I have an iPhone 3G with 3.0 software. I have downloaded books from iTunes that I purchased from Audiobooks. When I play them on my iPod, they are at the right speed, but on the iPhone, the speech is very fast and hard to listen to. I have gone into the ipod settings and set the EQ at Spoken Word, but that has not helped. I am sure it is just something I need to tweek. Does anyone have any suggestions?
