Audiobook on iPhone goes silent, plays in iTunes

I have a few audiobooks that play perfectly in iTunes but go silent after about 4.5 hours on my iPhone 3Gs. The time on the iphone shows the full time of the audiobook and the time on the iphone shows the audiobook is still playing. I'm on 3.1.2 and have had no issues like this in the past.
