For the 15.1 RC version (seen in the audioOS beta subreddit). It will go out live in Monday for all of us.

It brings Spatial Audio and Dolby Atmos support for the original Homepod (but not the Mini).

And lossless support for both the Mini and the OG Homepod.

I wonder if, given that with this update the OG Homepod will be able to do Atmos/surround sound processing and decoding by itself (currently the decoding its done by the ATV4K), this will improve surround sound performance when used for movies. We´ll see in a few hours.

I thought Homepod already supported Dolby Atmos, and Spatial audio? I know it does when listening to albums on Apple Music when speakers are connected via Apple TV...
Does that mean it will support both codecs without being connected to a AppleTv?

Correct. Now they support it on their own, without requiring an Apple TV 4K.

Does anyone know how many OG HomePods can Apple's Dolby Atmos support(minimum, maximum)?

I can’t activate Dolby atmos but can activate lossless. Any ideas why?

So I have not changed anything on the HomePod og side but I updated my iPad mini to 15.1 and I’m home it shows the music option but my iPhone 13 pro does not. Very weird.

I just updated one of my HomePod OG and reboot after and I see no such setting option for Lossless and/or Spatial

Make sure that your IOS devices are on 15.1 as well (final version). Then, follow this guide step by step.

Ah ha! Thank you very much for that! I would’ve never thought to look in there. I was checking the settings in each HomePod for Lossless and Dolby lol. Well it’s there and thanks again.

BTW, I always update my phone first, then watch, then iPad and MacBook then do all the AppleTVs and HomePods last.

One tip: For some reason lossless seems to be extremely taxing on the Wifi Network, and the Homepods have a lot of buffering/stops issues during streaming (at least for me).

But if you make them the default audio output of an Apple TV 4K hardwired to a router, they will use the Ethernet connection of the Apple TV for everything, and all the interactions, including Siri responsiveness and the streaming itself, will improve massively. Apple seems to have tighten up the ad hoc network between the Apple TV and the Homepods, and now, if your Apple TV is hardwired, they use that connection instead of their own Wi-Fi.

Clever way to improve performance!

To play lossless this way, make sure that "lossless audio" is enabled on both the Home App settings and the Apple TV 4K Music app settings.
