Aus 3g Iphone - Data Use In Usa Possible?

I have a legally unlocked Optus 3g iPhone.

I am currently using my T-Mobile "Pay as you Go" SIM in it while visiting the US (American living in Australia currently).

Would prefer to have data, but can't figure out how. T-Mobile says no (I understand their 3g is different anyway) and ATT also seems to say no (although I have read differently).

Any assistance would be appreciated. I need my GPS!
