Aussie unlocked iphone 4S use in US???

I have recently moved to Southern California and have what I'm told is an unlocked iphone that was on Telstra in Australia, is it possible to activate and use this phone on the Verizon network or do I need to buy a new phone. I was under the impression that the 4S was both GSM and CDMA. Any insight is appreciated.

Unlocked iPhones are GSM only.

Therefore you'd only be able to use it on AT&T
