I am planning on being in Australia for 12-24 months on a work visa.

Will I be able to purchase a subsidized iPhone on contract? Or should I buy an unlocked one before I go.

The iPhone4 is launched here on Friday, all the major Telco's carry them at a variety of prices. Telstra have the best coverage but they are a bit pricier normally. You will also be able to buy them unlocked from the Apple store or retail. When I moved down here a couple of years ago it took me about 3 months before I could get one on contract as they do look for some form of credit history (bank records in my case), but they do all offer pre paid options which again tend to be a bit pricier. Hope that helps.
