Auto-adjust screen brightness, a future feature?

Hey everyone, i searched a bit about this problem but couldn't find a solution, just many other people who have it too. But does anyone know how to fix it, or if any iphone actually has it?

I have my iphone 3gs almost 2 years now, with auto-brightness activated since then. I haven't once seen the display dim... Unless i manually change the brightness. Does anyone's auto-brightness work, on any iphone/iTouch/ipad model?
Or is it just a feature they will add...?

The display does not dim below the minimum setting set by the user, nor does it work in strong direct sunlight.
