I noticed this yesterday and I think I can confirm this after today. When you have dark mode set to automatic, it will only switch to dark or light when the always on display is turning off (in your pocket, face down or after a while). So as long as the AOD is showing the time, it will not change to dark or light automatically.

This is very annoying as it’s getting darker outside early and now my iPhone stays in light mode longer. Obviously I can switch manually, but what’s the use of automatic mode then.

Are you saying that if you "miss" the auto dark/light mode time (sunset/sunrise) while the AOD is active, when you go out of AOD it doesn't switch automatically to dark/light mode as soon as AOD is inactive (like it's catching up on what it missed while it was on)? Once you miss the time, that's it - your only choice is to switch it manually?

So for instance the way I have set it up is that at 20:00 it should change to dark mode automatically. In many cases it doesn’t do that immediately as to not interrupt your workflow, so it changes when your screen is turned off. That’s how it worked on my 12 Pro.

On the 14 Pro however it doesn’t seem to work anymore because of the always on display. So it’s passed 20:00, I lock my phone, the always on Lock Screen is shown, I grab my phone after a while and it’s still in light mode instead of dark mode. So basically the 14 Pro has to wait even for the always on display to be completely switched off to black before it changes to dark mode. That doesn’t seem like logical behavior to me.
