Auto Unlock - Requirements

Does anyone know if the requirement for Apple Watch Unlock on the Mac needs the watch to be on the same wifi network??

I generally use a guest wifi network quite a bit, and I'm finding that watch unlock just says Unlocking for a while then comes up with a password. Is this because I'm on a WiFi network that needs to login??

I know it says you need wifi enabled and also bluetooth, which they are, but I know that the watch will not be able to connect to the wifi network, so does this matter??

I don't think so, My auto unlock works when I open my macbook in the library. At the time my laptop hasn't connected to the wifi at the time. I think it negotiates a connection between the watch and the macbook locally for auto unlock.

I thought it used Bluetooth.
