Automatic App Downloads

On both my iMac and rMBP (both late 2013) I have "download newly available updates in the background" unchecked. I do this as I have a satellite Internet connection and don't want to use up my peak time data allowance on updates...I can do the downloads after 11pm when I have an unlimited data allowance.

However, on both machines apps are still downloading updates in the background.

Any ideas on how to stop this?

Have you tried unchecking 'Automatically check for updates' and 'Automatically download purchases made on other apps'?

It's not all that hard checking for updates manually once every week or two.
