Automatic sync RSS reader

I've been using several RSS reader apps to go along with my google reader account. All of them sync well with google. However, I've noticed that they all fetch feeds (sync with google reader) when the the apps opens or when it's open. Not when it's closed. I've seen this functionality in greader app on my android device that notifies me when a feed gets fetched eventhough it's closed. Something similar to mail. Does anyone know an app that does that in the background?

From what I understand automatic downloads currently aren't supported for third party apps in iOS.
