So after firing up the new MBP just a few days ago, I got a prompt to download a bunch of software updates. This included various things...an updated itunes, java for os X, macbook/macbook pro update... and a bunch of other things. All in all it was a few hundred megs worth of downloads.
I decided to do it at a later time.
Fast forward to today, when I decided I wasn't using the mbp and could let it sit for a while downloading. Imagine my surprise when everything finished in about 5 minutes. I ran the 'check for software updates' again and it looked like everything went through since there were no more new updates.
however, I went to the apple site directly and downloaded the macbook pro update again and it installed like it was never on my computer to begin with. Now maybe i'm used to Windows, but I figured if it was already installed via the auto update, I would've received some sort of prompt saying it was already on there.
Is it possible the auto update didn't actually work?
