Does anyone know of a way that new photos taken with the iPhone are automatically copied to an iCloud folder. I tried creating a workflow with IFTTT but it is unreliable. My workflow now is to take a group of photos then go to the Photos app and manually using share copy the images to a folder. It would save a great deal of time if this could happen automatically.

Since apps cannot run in the background in iOS I don't think there is a solution. The only other thing I can think of if there were a separate camera app that would save photos to iCloud rather than to the camera roll. This would actually be better since I don't need the photos in the camera roll. I think this could be possible but is there such a camera app?

Settings/ Photos/ iCloud Photos/ ON

Doing this replaces Camera Roll with iCloud Photo Library, i.e. all existing Camera Roll photos and new ones you take are uploaded to iCloud.
