Automatically marking emails as read

I have the iOS Mail app set up with my Gmail account (IMAP) and realized that Mail is marking my newest message as read. I go back into the app and mark it as unread, but about 20 minutes later the app marks it as read again. I have isolated the issue to the Mail app - once I removed Gmail from the Mail app, the issue stopped happening. Has anyone else noticed this? I am on 9.0.2.
