AV Digital Adapter Set-up Question

I just bought an AV adapter over the weekend. I took a quick look at it last night ant it looks like there is a spot to hook up a USB cable to the adapter and then into the TV. I don't belive that's the way it's meant to be used, but it doesn't look like an HDMI cable will fit onto the adapter. I didn't have much time last night to check it out, so any input in this area will be appreciated. Thanks!!

Is it the official Apple digital AV adapter ?

I've got the official one and it has two connections, a dock connecter to plug in the charge cable and an HDMI connecter to hook it up to an HD TV using an HDMI cable.
