they're probably not being hosted from the regular server due to the load and such if your 'tar was updated since the move its displaying the old one. things'll be back to normal later today or tomorrow when things die down a bit.
Avatars are often disabled or moved to another server (or something) during big announcements to help ease the load on the forum's servers the troubles you're experiencing will no doubt be due to this.

Funky is indeed the technical word for the recent adventures of our avatars.
We use extra servers for big events and keeping the avatar servers up to date gets rather tricky. Soon enough, all will be back to normal, as Jaffa says.
