AVCHD DVD VS mini DV?

Hi all,

I am a total newbie in this field and plan to quit my job to make movies.

I checked a few posts here and it seems to me that most people are using miniDVs to shot movies. I thought DVD format would be a trend - can anybody enlight me what is the difference and what your recommendation for me? Thanks.
