avchd - imovie to idvd - but no sound on the tv?

I've just bought a Canon HG21.

I downloaded the movie clips to Imovie08 and dragged them across to Idvd on my mbpro.

Then burnt a dvd-r from Idvd.

I can play it beautifully on the mac, but when I put it in the dvd player although the image is great, there's no sound on the tv.

What's happening and how can I fix it so I can share the dvd's with family who don't have computers or blue-ray dvd players.
