New to FCP. I have a Canon Vixia HF G40 camcorder. What is the preferred video recording mode to use to record (AVCHD or MP4) and then edit in FCP and share in 1080 P best quality? PS. Frame rate 59.94 or less???? Thanks

Quality-wise EITHER AVCHD or MP4 will be more than enough. Just depends if you want more or less data to deal with. I see NO reason to go with 59.94. The MP4 is less compressed and higher frame rates obviously mean more data AND shorter "exposure", which makes for more of a "crispy video" look. I see a little to no reason to go beyond 30fps, unless maybe you intend on doing endless slomos, but even then…

In the end, it entirely depends on where you are and even more so what you intend to do with the final product?!

If you don’t need to use the files on anything that doesn’t support it without conversion I would use avchd.

As for the frame rate that’s really an artistic choice. You usually want to keep it half of your shutter speed but it again an artistic choice. Also relevant is your target distribution and considerations about whether you need to do pull down to match an output frame rate.
