iPod Average Battery Lif During Video PLayback?

I just got my ipod video recently and decided to watch my first movie on it during a car ride. I barly got through pirates Of the Caribean on it. I only had a sliver of battery power left after watching it. Is this normal? Im also thinking of buying this mobile battery thing for usb stuff to plug into to recharge it when i dont have access to anything else. Its about 30$ at Canadian Tire.
