To play .avi files, download and install the DivX QuickTime codec. To play .wav files, download and install nothing. iTunes plays .wav files.

once you download the Divx quicktime, will it automatically start to work or do I have to do something else?

DivX QuickTime codec. And yes, it will work automatically after installation.
