AVI burning to iDVD problems

I have been having trouble burning an AVI file using iDVD. The file is about 2 1/2 hours long and I can set everything up in iDVD but when I go to create a disk image of the file it wont let me because the file is 4.7 gigs. Is there a way I can still do this because I cant shrink the AVI file any smaller and that is what is causing the file to be so big. If I cant do it in idvd, is there any freeware software that can create an image file of the avi so i can burn it on a dvd? thanks

In the Project Info page (COMMAND-I), have you got the Encoding set to best Performance or Best Quality? Toggling this can sometimes help.
