i would try:

open avi in QT

use the trim sliders and selct all of the movie , copy , new player , paste , save as MOV

works for me sometimes

o and how did you get the google vid on avi ?

Well the movies like 8 mins long but in QT its 16. I had already tried that:( . And I just pressed download and it started downloading as an AVI.

As a general proposition, download and install the DivX 6 codec. Then you won't need to convert anything. You will be able to import your .avi file into just about any QuickTime-based application, including iMovie. As for the Google video, I don't know what's going on there. The inline player indicates that the video is downloading faster it is playing. The audio plays fine. However, the video does not keep up with the either the audio or the download.
