Is there a way to edit AVI movie files, shot on a Nikon d90, using iMovie '08?

If so, how do you do it?

Thanks!

transcode them to a usable format using mpeg streamclip or handbrake. Mpeg streamclip will create DV files (like from a camera). I am not sure, but I think iMovie will handle h.264 files which could be created with handbrake.

Both programs are free downloads.

Yes, but if you're going to convert them, convert to DV. Converting to H.264 will (1) take an eternity and (2) you'll end up with lower quality video because iMovie will just have to decompress it anyway and then recompress it.
DV is compressed too, but way less than H.264

If QuickTime can play it, iMovie can handle it. It will convert it into DV itself. If you install Perian, QuickTime will most likely be able to play it even if it cannot do so out of the box.

Quicktime will play it, but iMovie '08 will not accept the file.
