AVI files into itunes

Hi
Is it possible to import avi files into itunes?

I have been told that the files need to be re-coded into mpgs first using handbrake--is this necessary as I have several hundred short avi movie files and it will be very time consuming to re-code all the avi files I have stored

If it is necessary is there a way using handbrake that I can upload several files at once into handbrake instead of one at a time?

You can use Handbrake (freeware) to convert files to iTunes compatible.
