I am a video editor and have finally succumbed to the mac world... In making the transition from PC/Adobe Premiere, I have been trying to understand how Mac/Final Cut deals with .avi files.

My archived masters are saved as AVI files. Quicktime will play them, but they are not full quality. How can i transfer my AVI files to be read by my mac without compromising quality? Is recapturing from my mDV masters into final cut the best way to go? Are my avi files useless for Mac?

In addition, I have a lot of unedited captured material as AVi, captured through Adobe Premiere. Is there any way of working with this, or do I need to recapture everything?

If only the world were more compatible.

You're awesome for reading my random question, please let me know you have any wisdom to share.

Yes.

AVI is just a wrapper, not a codec so you can play them back as long as you have the needed codec installed. All of Apple's video apps are based around QuickTime though so trying to utilize existing AVI files is going to be cumbersome.
