I read this is another thread, but there was no explanation. Can anyone tell me how?? Thanks in advance!!!

You'll need to convert the AVI to a format that iMovie can understand. This will probably be .DV or .mov. QuickTime Pro works with the right codec (divx or 3ivx) and all you have to do is export the AVI as one of the iMovie-compatible formats and you should be set.

Not sure about iMovie but you can burn an avi to a DVD with Toast if you installed the required Quicktime plugins
