.avi to .m4v - Need Recommendation

I am looking for a simple video converter from avi to m4v, I know it's as simple as a google search. But many are restricted to the first X minutes or only 1 file.

Could you please recommend one that is free, and has no limitations on how much I can convert. I was going to use HandBrake, but i've only used that to rip DVD's so I don't know if it can convert video files.

I Recommend using handbrake i use it to convert all my video files to .m4v to use on my apple TV it works like a charm but can get complex with all the options but standard options with produce a decent video aswell even though an avi is compressed and isnt perfect quality to begin with
