I've noticed Avira (free version) lags when I click to open/update it. It didn't always do this and I'm worried something is wrong. Has anyone else experience this, and if so, what was the solution? Un/reinstall?

Uninstall and don't reinstall it. Use Malwarebytes, a good ad-blocker, Gatekeeper and a firewall (built into macOS or your router).
