Hi all,

Will try and keep this brief. I had an in-store demo of AVP when the headset had its UK launch back in July. Despite my prescription glasses having a prism in, the machine identified appropriate lenses (without a prism in) that were then fitted and worked for me beautifully. Not being in a position to buy at the time, the headset was ‘saved’ to my online Apple Store bag in case I wanted to buy.

Fast forward to Tuesday night. Mrs has given her approval to spend, so having read every release date and long term review possible, I book another demo to get an idea of VisionOS2 before buying. My glasses go onto the reading machine, same glasses as back in July, except this time the resultant QR code the staff member read off on his handset pretty much said ‘error’ so couldn’t match any lenses. I dug back through my save basket - the specific lenses used in the July demo hadn’t been saved, just the handset and the need to prescription lenses. I was asked if I had a copy of my prescription to hand. I didn’t, and was asked if I wanted to rebook the demo in case it was a case of the specific lenses in stock at the store had been damaged or were missing.

Last night, Wednesday, I made another demo appointment and this time made sure to have a copy of my prescription with me. No joy again with the machine, but this time was told that store staff cannot use my prescription to match lenses, only the machine case as it anonymises my identify from the lens selection. Once again, no demo and no purchase.

I’m still wanting to demo the headset again and ideally purchase based on the lenses that were used in the headset. I’m seemingly unable to do this in-store anymore due to some change that precludes the glasses machine reading my prescription.

I could simply order the headset online and upload my prescription. Without any way of adding a note that says ‘fulfil the prescription but ignore the prism bit - i don’t need it for AVP’, I’m wary of the order being rejected out of hand on account of the prism or, worse, the AVP headset itself being charged for and delivered but the Ziess lens order being rejected, leaving little time to return the headset.

Another option is maybe to try another store (with a third 2 hour round trip) in the hopes that their machine might work. Anyone come across similar when they’ve tried an in-store demo? Or is anyone aware if the in-store machine might have changed how they assess a prescription for lenses from reading glasses?

Try this:
Go to a store and try regular reading glasses until you obtain the best reading experience for each eye. Test by reading something (black letters 10 points in size on white background) from approximately 12" - 14" making sure the letters are sharp and comfortable. If you have different eye measurements, cover one eye being careful not to put pressure on it, and label them accordingly (left or right)
Bring both glasses to the Apple Store and tell them which one to measure for each eye.

I doubt I’ll be much help, but I am sorry the process has been so difficult.

Just some thoughts… would your optometrist write a prescription without the prism?

Could you try ordering the lenses then do the demo? Definitely not ideal. Just trying to think what I might do.

I really hope you get this resolved so you can start enjoying your Vision Pro!

I had much the same problems. The machine could not read my glasses. I uploaded my prescription to Apple to order the optical inserts but it was refused. I had my optometrist write a new prescription. I uploaded it but it was refused too.
After talking with many people at Zeiss, I discovered that they use an automated program that was designed for regular glasses. It looks at a combination of the numbers on your prescription (some of which do not matter with the vision pro). My eyes are very bad but I wanted to experience the vision pro myself.

So I went into their online prescription checker for the vision pro and played with the numbers until I got a combination that worked. My optometrist wrote a prescription with those numbers. It was with the understanding that it was for the Vision Pro and not glasses. I just wanted the magnification/distance numbers and the rest of the numbers were not that relevant. I was willing to take a chance and accept that they may not be perfect.

My order for the optical inserts went through, i got my vision pro glasses and I have enjoyed it for the last 6 months. It may not be perfect but it is still good and I do not regret it.

Funny thing is while I waited for my prescription to come I was doing just fine on AVP without it. When the finally came didn't notice much difference.
