So I know Apple has officially said you need AirPods Pro 2 with the USB C case. I have the Pro 2 without the USB C case. Does that mean I have to get a whole new pair with the newer case or just the newer case itself?

No, your current ones will work fine. The advantage of the newer version with the USB C case is they will support lossless audio with the Vision Pro. Changing out just the case will not work, you’d have to get new AirPods to get the lossless.

I’d suggest trying your current AirPod Pros before replacing them for lossless audio. I would bet the difference is negligible for most people, and this is coming from someone who can go a bit crazy with audio gear sometimes. I’m sticking with my lightning Pro 2s.

That’s probably what I’m going to do. Doubt the delta is noticeable anyways.

The 2023 USB-C AirPods Pro 2 should be seen as “AirPods Pro 2S” or “AirPods Pro 2.5.”

Difference between these AirPods Pro 2s (s for plural):

some Apple executives revealed that the revised version of the AirPods Pro 2 with USB-C has an updated H2 chip that runs at both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies, while the original version of the AirPods Pro 2, just like any other AirPods, only operates at 2.4 GHz.

The 5 GHz frequency allows AirPods to transmit high-quality audio with lower latency. When it comes to restricting lossless audio to when the earbuds are connected to a Vision Pro, the executives explained that the higher frequency requires the AirPods to be close to the device in order to work flawlessly. As a result, they opted to limit lossless audio to the headset.

Upping this thread - can anyone share their experience with using older AirPods Pros (or regular AirPods even) with the AVP? Is the latest USB-C version absolutely worth it or do the older ones work fine in terms of overall sound quality/latency? Thanks!

Yeah I’m very curious. I’ll probably probably “upgrade” mine anyways when I get my VP, but I’m curious too.

Will be able to compare and report back in about 3 hours. Ordered the newer AirPod Pros. And picking them up at the same time as the AVP. If I don’t notice enough difference, just gonna return the new AirPod Pros.

I broke down and got the USBC AirPods when they were on sale at Best Buy. Did let me try something out last week. Had two iPads, one with the Lions game and one with Zoom with my friends. Had each set of AirPods connected to a different iPad, and one of each in an ear. Was able to listen to the game with my right ear and talk and listen to the guys with my left. Gonna work out something like this with the Vision.

Have you had a chance to test these out at all yet?
