So iP8 and iPX are Qi compatible. AW at present is not. So anyone know if when AirPower is launched a firmware update will make AW Qi compatible? I shudder to think Apple is going to fracture the way different devices can be wirelessly charged.

Doubtful. AW technically is using Qi, however Apple has tweaked the standard so that it is only compatible with Apple-certified chargers - thus their introduction of the AirPower Mat later this year. I suppose it might be possible that future generations of AW would be compatible, but it doesn't appear to be the direction Apple is heading in.
