Rumour has it that there is a processor update coming. It seems crazy that Apple would update the regular watch to the S9 with a faster processor and then leave the Ultra as is.

I'm guessing that either we'll get an S9 with the same processor as current and no change to Ultra, or we'll get a refreshed processor in both S9 and Ultra.

I really hope they redesign the whole case because it is unwatchable.
For those who want it black, it seems to me that the black titanium precedents had not a good feedback about the scratches.
More than the Ultra it will be interesting to see what they will do with the S9, as S8 has lost any appeal.

I would be perfectly happy with an Ultra 2 in black aluminum for a lesser price. But that will not happen, I guess.

The sand blasted ti looks exactly like alu to me plus alu would be lighter, but Apple wants the $$$ so…yes unlikely!

Yes. When discussing the price, the Ultra is not much more expensive than a stainless steel version. But I bought my aluminum watches for reasons and that was price point and weight.

But ok, let's wait what is happening in fall.

Yea sure. I actually really like the natural alu as a look but for me I NEED the sapphire screen, fingers crossed for Apple to finally deliver 🤞🤞🤞

Ultra could also have a release cycle like the SE has, whatever that cycle is.

No, it couldn‘t. Why would the top-of-the-line have the release cycle of the budget version? Makes no sense.

They will of course not re-design it after one year. The regular Watch got a re-design every 3 years, and relatively slight re-designs at that. If you don‘t like the Ultra now, you‘re probably never going to like it. Plenty of people do like the way it looks, though.

Those cases were few and far between. It was DLC coated after all.

Yeah, because it would make no sense to sell the Watch marketed as being especially rugged in an aluminum enclosure.

Both the Ultra and the SE cover the ends of the spectrum. Assumption is that the revenue Apple makes is overwhelmingly with series AW.

But yes, not really probable that they do not upgrade the Ultra.

Out of interest: is the titanium material really that rugged? Saw quite a few reports of scratches in Ultra. Or does it prevent more serious damages?

Titanium is much stronger than aluminium, meaning it won‘t dent as easily. I guess it‘s also more scratch-resistant, but not sure about that. Either way ruggedness in general is about structural strength, not cosmetic (surface) appearance.

if they offered a gold (or even bronze) color option and kept the design the same, id upgrade my ultra. Short of that, I dont really think tiny incremental changes will entice me to switch. My main issues with the vanilla apple watch are tired/old design and having to charge daily, the ultra solved that

I am hoping we will see an AW Series 2 with a darker color option and other options with the accent other than orange. I haven’t seen any rumors for an update.

yes, there have been very few rumors but based on the seeming popularity of Ultra and the fact it replaced many higher end Series watch styles... it seems likely they will update it every year. With the Series 9 likely to get a faster and more power efficient chip I can't imagine Apple allowing their Ultra to not get the same tech, so I expect those under the hood changes... maybe leading to better battery life. Having 2 colors of Titanium (lighter and darker options) seems obvious also this year. We shall see, but the rumors indicate the Ultra isn't due a major body redesign until 2025 (the Series 10 will get one in 2024.)

I’d expect a proper software update for the Ultra with or before a new hardware version. The announced update is pretty disappointing. Adding no meaningful features to a 1000e ‘in development’ sports watch before releasing a new hardware version within one year later does not feel ok.

Why do you need a faster processor in a watch? The watch is only for checking notifications and tracking fitness.

The only advantage would be power efficiency for non-Ultra models.

So I think Apple will not update the Ultra this year. They will just launch Series 9 with S9 chip, which would improve battery life.
And Ultra will get an update next year with the rumored micro-LED display.

There could be a new sensor in the new watches this year, which would necessitate an Ultra S2. It won’t be the much rumoured blood glucose just yet though

First time I've heard this 'in development', it's not. Nobody at Apple said it was and you shouldn't have bought an Ultra thinking it would get massive software updates because it's 'in development'. You get what you buy.

Maybe next time do some research before buying something...

Of course the Ultra is a product ‘in development’, between quotes - The hardware is pretty solid, but yes - I do think Apple can do better on the software side to unleash more of the potential of the hardware and sensors. It shouldn’t have to take a company like Apple over 2 years to catch up on features like offline mapping and load & recovery metrics. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Ultra, but more as a smartwatch than a ‘sportswatch’ at the moment. I’m still using my Garmin, Whoop and Oura for health and training, it would just be a lot nicer (and cheaper) to have it all in one place.

I'm assuming it will be on a similar update path to other Apple products. So I would expect 3nm processors across the line this fall, including the Ultra, with the main benefit being improved battery life. I suspect we may be waiting another year for glucose monitoring. This week's software announcements make for a major upgrade in the usability of the Ultra but also the standard Apple Watch as sport watches; and they go back several generations of watch, so I don't see why they wouldn't put a new processor in there if there's a benefit to using it. And if there's one thing the 3nm chips will surely provide and one thing Apple's watch line needs more than anything else, it's battery life.
