I currently use a garmin instinct 1 to track my walk distance data, I downgraded from the fenix line because I didnt use 1/2 the features it had. Now after watching a bunch of videos of the awu I am considering buying it because getting notifications and controlling music etc from my wrist and leaving the phone in my pocket...the instinct can do some of this but assume the awu is better.

Is the stock software on the awu good enough for sleep-walk distance and duration data without buying 3rd party apps? Does it save these your workout data incase you want to check it later? The garmin gives me a summary of my workout sessions and even puts the route on a map when I save it...kinda cool though Idk how often I will go back and check previous workouts.

Sleep walking? Is that a typo? :)

It tracks steps and distance constantly. But you can trigger it to track a specific walking/hiking workout too for a more focused view. Yes, stock apps.

Garmin Connect will give you much more information for recovery and a lot of other metrics. Even the apps available on Apple do not give as information for recovery and a lot of other metrics. Even the paid apps available on Apple do not give as much as Garmin. however, if you’re not that serious about looking at your history or training metrics, then Apple is the way to go.

Getting the Ultra Seems like an expensive way to go just to track walks! However, that’s just my opinion, if you have the money then why not eh.

The stock apps are good enough for what you want and yes your workouts record in the fitness app for you to go over whenever you want.

thanks Im still thinking about it, Im looking at the benefit of also being able to check messages and control my music/podcasts as well...the garmin kinda does this.. except youtube videos , yes I listen to them while working out as well. I may get the ultra and keep my garmin and rotate them ..I also looked hard at the series 8 45mm, the display on the ultra just blows it away imo, my eyes are aging

I had the ultra but didn’t think the screen was any better than my previous 45mm Series 7. I still wear an Apple Watch daily but dedicated running watch for activities. I actually wear both

It's about 2% larger in terms of usable screen real estate. It's a bit of an optical illusion.

just an update, I am going to get the series 8 45mm with an olive nike sports band -spigen armor case for everyday wear and upgrading the garmin to the forerunner series...hopefully apple pushes their fitness software to compete more with garmin connect in the future
