My mac has been playing up for a while but it’s 4 years old so I figured that was normal. It crashed more and sometimes the screen wouldn’t go on when it booted. Now it won’t go past the gray apple screen, it just shuts itself down. It won’t start in safe mode. Fsck is returning an problem with catalogue tree B and hasn’t fixed it after more tries than I care to remember. When I do fsck_hfs –r dev/disk it says it’s rebuilding catalogue b tree but it says it could not be repaired. Fsck-hfs-d got a bad super block problem. Fsck –b32 goes back to b tree problem.

It won’t load techtool off the apple care disk. It will load hardware check off the OS disk and says everything is fine but it won’t load from the OS disk- it sounds like it is trying but then ejects the disk and goes to grey screen. When I press option as I turn it on it doesn’t show up the disk. I can’t afford to get Disk Warrior.

What other options am I left with? Can I reformat without getting the OS disk to work? I'm thinking I may as well buy a new harddrive then once I have that installed see if I can save anything off the old one.

edit: I ran hardware test again, this time it says my hardrive has an error
