iPad Back of box says "Black" not "Space Gray"

My brother and I picked up 2 iPad airs over the weekend.

His (64GB), on the back of the box on the sticker label it says "iPad Wi-Fi 64GB Space Gray".

On mine it says "iPad Wi-Fi 16GB Black".

Is this normal? I thought they would all say Space Gray. Shouldn't they?

Well black is space gray right? They only make 2 colors. They are identical in color, the box says black on it though. Just seemed odd to me.

Also, when I check up the serial numbers on the Apple Self Solve the picture shown is of a Silver iPad air. I always thought the color shown would be of the model the serial number entered.
 
you bought a confused iPad air. box says black serial number shows silver and white... but the shell is space gray.

Space gray on my phone is considerably lighter than the black on my (1st gen) iPad mini.
 
Our space gray says black... And we bought it from an apple store.

Yeah I know Space Gray is lighter but when you buy an iPad air you get the choice of Space Gray or Silver (that's it, there's no other choices). We both bought 2 Space Gray. On his label it says "Space Gray" on mine it says "Black". I was just wondering if anyone else's says "Black" as well.

It sounds like Apple went with the name 'space gray' when iPads were already well into production. Is there any way to tell the date of manufacture from the serial numbers?

The black one I have was just purchased on Friday from apple in a recent shipment.
 
You clearly have a defective box. I'd return it if I were you, and get one that's marked correctly.

It may not seem like much now, but it will probably grate on your nerves the longer you have it. Will you be able to live with that box three months from now?:p
 
Return it immediately. The unit is clearly defective. Unexpected results can happen if you use it. Loss of hair, teeth becoming space gray, skin losing some gamuts in its color, one eye getting a yellow tint...
 
Actually this could be a collector's item in the distant future - if there aren't too many of these misprinted boxes. Much like misprinted postage stamps/ currency bills etc.

The black 16GB is week 40 (says black on the box)
The black 64GB is week 45 (says space grey)

Is there a thread on quality of devices based on build week? Would be interesting to read.
