Unfortunately no, it won't work when a machine is asleep. A sleeping machine has no active network connection and the hard drive is not spinning.

Echo'd. This should work. I don't think you can WoL over airport though so you'll have to have a wired ethernet connection in order to remotely wake it and use that feature.

I hope you guys are right. I can't see Apple giving .Mac WOL privileges though. Hopefully I'm wrong, like usual.

I just don't see the point of this then I guess. I wouldn't leave my computer on constantly just "in case" I need to access something on it when I was away. Granted it may be useful for networked computers throughout a house or something maybe. It sounds like an awesome idea but I put my mbp asleep when i'm away.
