will back to my mac work if the computer you are going back to is in sleep mode? Lid closed?

Unfortunately no, it won't work when a machine is asleep. A sleeping machine has no active network connection and the hard drive is not spinning.

So do people leave their macs awake when they go to work? Seems odd.

I just don't see the point of this then I guess. I wouldn't leave my computer on constantly just "in case" I need to access something on it when I was away. Granted it may be useful for networked computers throughout a house or something maybe. It sounds like an awesome idea but I put my mbp asleep when i'm away.
