Back to my mac doesn't work

I have a first generation mini and a macbook pro. Both are connected high speed internet services. Back to my mac is switched on in preferences of both. I can never find either computer in the finder in order to use back to my mac. Can they be asleep, or have screen saver on? Has any one else figured this out?
