I'm about to checkout and a thought just ran through my head, since they are charging me separately for the AirPods and giving the $159.00 discount off the MBA. If I return the AirPods would the MBA still be 159.00 less?

Doubtful. The BTS promo is a package deal... if you break up the pieces, there's no "deal" to be had. YMMV.
