Back-up During Sync Problems

Everytime I plug in my iPhone to sync is performs a back-up which takes anywhere from 5-20 minutes each time it does it. What is the deal? Is there a way to keep it from backing up every time?
 
So nobody has any ideas? Does everyone's phone also do this backup each time? My old iPhone never did this.
