Back up iMessage outside of iCloud

Have my iPhone and a Macbook.

When I search online I mostly find a lot of very scammy "writeups" about doing it with shady/broken/outdated tools.

I don't use iCloud - what is the "best" way for me to export/archive my iMessages?

In an ideal world I could keep adding to the archive - new chats, new messages, over time. Saving any relevant media included a nice bonus... etc.
