Back up on Lion

I just checked the storage part on system information and it says I have 237.44GB of backups. What is this? I have time machine turned on but these on my internal hd don't seem to disappear. Any help would be great. Thanks

For Time Machine users on notebooks running Lion, space may being consumed by Time Machine local snapshots, which can be disabled.
