Back Up with Iomega 500GB

I'm buying this external drive soon and was wondering how I set it up to work on my Macbook? And also what does partition mean? I'm a big amateur with these things and I'm using it mostly for movie editing and music files? Thanks for the help

Ok well I bought the External Drive today not that model so I partitioned it does it matter what I call it and I have Final Cut Express Projects do I need an extra copy of it on my Internal Harddrive or can I just keep it on my external?
