Background app refresh and latest gmail update

Did the December 5 gmail update remove background app refresh? I could swear I used to have a gmail option in the background app refresh section of settings but now it's gone. Is there something I have to do to get it back? Thanks.

I can confirm that: it's gone.
I don't think you are going to miss something

I'm not sure but I would imagine it's the same reason that Mailbox removed it too. Apparently it isn't working exactly as advertised or something to that effect.
