1) What apps do you have Background App Refresh ON/OFF for and why?

2) If I turn off Background App Refresh for an app that I use as a Widget will it cause the Widget to not work/update?

3) Anyone know if turning off Background App Refresh for these apps will cause any functionalities to stop working: ChatGPT, Waze, WhatsApp and Weather app?

Disabling Background App Refresh does not affect notifications and widgets.

1) All of them OFF because I don’t care about that functionality and it significantly impacts battery life

2) I don’t know

3) No for Waze and WhatsApp, for weather it may not update the current temperature until you launch the app (but I think the widget updates anyway), and I don’t use the bo-bot.

I've had it switched off from the beginning of it being implemented by Apple. I don't need social media apps updating while I'm not using my phone 😂 One thing it may impact - although I've not tested this - is What'sApp's ability to back up chats to iCloud. I've always had this switched to manual, as I've had it hang in the background and use excessive battery.

I also have it disabled, and always have done.

It doesn't seem to impact anything. My widgets (including weather ones) update fine.

Years ago, when Apple first touted this feature, they explained how social media apps such as Facebook could keep themselves permanently updated in the background. Since then, it's not really mentioned and I now have no idea what advantages it's meant to bring.
