Background color won't change in iPhoto 08

For some reason, in iPhoto 08 the background color adjustment isn't responding in the appearance preferences...no matter which way I move the slider it stays on dark gray (where I set it in iPhoto 06). I've tried deleting the iphoto preference file and repairing permissions to no avail. Not sure what else to try short of doing a re-install.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance for your input!
