Backing up an original iPhone after the new iPhone 4 is set up?

I broke the screen on an old iPhone and purchased a new one. Apple activated the new iPhone 4 in the store. I plugged my old one in to iTunes when I got home and tried to back it up but the backup starts then fails right when the barber pole goes away. When I plugged my new phone into iTunes it does a normal setup but never asked me to chose the backup to restore from. When i right click on Devices and select back up I noticed the original phone doesn't have a back up available. How can I back up my old iPhone at this point to move the apps and pictures, etc. over to the new phone?
