Backing up an unregistered Iphone before registering

Hello,

I am helping someone out with their Iphone 4 which they have been using for 6 months or so without registering it (they had it setup in a shop). They
need to register it to their computer now. I am worried that by registering the Iphone all of the contacts on the phone will be wiped!

Is there any way to backup the iphone before registering it with Itunes.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

No, registering it won't delete or do anything besides send the registration info to Apple.
