I've been searching around only to find older articles from 2008 or so - but I'm trying to find a solution.

I'd like to experiment with the 4.3 beta, but first I want to backup my current firmware image including all of my apps, settings, text messages, email configurations, etc. They're already backed up to iTunes, but I'd much rather have an .ipsw that I can archive onto my NAS here on my local network.

Anyone know if this is possible, or do I just need to use iTunes and tinyumbrella?

Never heard of something like this but I agree - a Norton Ghost solution for iDevices would be sweet :) The only way I know of, which works, is to backup your current apps/config via iTunes, use PKGBackup to backup your Cydia apps and springboard layout etc AND make sure you have SHSH blobs stored for the IPSW you may want to revert back to after you've played with the 4.3 beta.
