Backing up Data

I must have a new hard drive installed and I want to save as much data as posible. I have an iMac 24" and I know it has a cd/dvd burner but I have never copied pictures, addresses, etc. by this means. How can I make copies of my personal data so I can reload it after the new hard drive is installed? Thanks in advance!

If your running leopard, use time machine. This will backup your entire machine.

OR

Get a copy of carbon cloner - This will clone the contents of your drive.

Time Machine

I have fooled around with Time Machine but don't see how it will save data to a CD. I don't have an extra external hard drive so I need to burn the data to a CD since there is too much data for a memory stick.
